    The Context

A warm timber façade, and desert-inspired landscape shape the character of this project in Balangan

Veerle's project is a two-bedroom villa with a refined, moody character, inspired by the atmospheric references of Homeboys Studio and further developed with a more contextual response to Bali’s climate, site conditions, and surrounding environment.

From the moment you enter the villa, the outdoor area immediately becomes the visual anchor of the property. A double-curve swimming pool creates a strong focal point, softening the geometry of the space while adding a distinctive architectural identity. The pool is paired with a random Jogja stone pool deck, chosen to enhance the natural texture and grounded atmosphere of the villa. A hammock is also integrated into the outdoor area, introducing a relaxed element that enriches the experience of the exterior living space.

While the villa carries a strong individual design language, certain site regulations were carefully respected. One of the requirements from the landowner was that the fence had to remain white, ensuring visual consistency with the surrounding villas in the area. This constraint was incorporated into the design without disrupting the overall mood and architectural direction of the project.

Architecturally, the front façade is enhanced with timber elements that bring warmth and depth to the exterior. The landscape follows a desert-inspired approach, using planting and tones that complement the villa’s brown color palette. The result is a calm, cohesive composition where architecture and landscape work together in a visually consistent way.

Upon entering the villa, the interior leads directly toward a sunken living area, creating a strong visual connection between the main wall, kitchen, and staircase leading to the primary bedroom. This linear arrangement gives the space a clear sense of flow, while the lowered living area adds intimacy and character. Beneath the staircase, an arch detail is introduced to maximize the use of space while reinforcing the villa’s soft architectural language.

Behind the kitchen is the first bedroom, designed with an added gelam wood feature on the headboard to bring texture and a stronger natural character into the room. In the bathroom, the shower area is finished with green herringbone stone, creating a subtle contrast that adds richness while remaining harmonious with the overall material palette.

The second bedroom is located on the upper floor and follows a softer architectural approach. An arched wall frames the bathroom area, adding elegance and visual continuity to the space. The bedroom entrance is designed to blend seamlessly with the wardrobe, creating a clean and integrated look. In the bathroom, the bathtub area is finished with Palimanan stone, reinforcing the villa’s natural and elegant atmosphere.

Overall, Veerle's project reflects a balance between mood, materiality, and contextual design. Every detail, from the curved pool and natural stone finishes to the timber façade and soft interior arches, was developed to create a villa that feels sophisticated, grounded, and deeply connected to its Balangan setting.
