The Context
In Babakan, this villa pairs warm architecture with a thoughtful response to its sacred setting
Located in Babakan on a site of around 3.4 are, this project consists of two two-bedroom villas designed with strong attention to their surroundings. Facing a large temple and the subak landscape, the design is not only about the building itself, but also about how the architecture can respect the culture and environment around it.
Several site rules shaped the design from the beginning. The buildings follow a one-meter setback from the site boundary, and within a nine-meter radius of the temple boundary, two-storey buildings are not allowed. Because of this, both villas were designed as single-storey homes with a low and calm form, helping them sit quietly in the landscape without disturbing temple activities nearby.
The architectural style takes inspiration from Mediterranean design, combined with a lighter and more modern approach. The overall form is simple, with clean lines and a soft appearance. An off-white color palette was chosen to create a warm and gentle feeling, while also blending naturally with the surrounding setting. Large openings with sliding doors and windows bring in plenty of natural light and create a stronger connection between the indoor spaces and the garden.
The outdoor area is designed with a quiet sense of refinement, where simplicity and function work hand in hand. The pool deck is finished in ceramic, chosen not only for its durability but also for its ease of maintenance, allowing the villa to remain elegant, comfortable, and practical for long-term use.The result is a home that feels serene and thoughtfully composed within its setting. Warm Mediterranean influences are expressed through a calm and understated architectural language, while the overall design remains deeply respectful of the cultural landscape and natural beauty that surround it.
